Frameless motors provide the ultimate flexibility for maximum integration within the application design. The motor is typically mounted on the same shaft as the payload thereby eliminating couplings etc. which would normally connect a housed motor's shaft to the payload. Not only does this save cost and space but also provides a much stiffer servo solution thereby enabling much higher inertia mis-matching which would typically max-out at 10:1 for a housed motor

PMW Dynamics use exactly this principle in a number of our geared actuator designs utilising the gearbox bearings to support the rotor of the motor. Since our motor packages are already super flat, and without the need for mechanical couplings, the actuators can be exceptionally compact from an axial perspective

Outer rotor configurations ideally lend themselves to wheel drive applications with the static element of the motor connecting to the stationary hub and the wheel assembly bolting directly to the outer rotating element
